This morning I woke up and took my dog for a long walk in the woods, and it felt magnificent. I really felt like myself, again.
In my own career change from Account Director to soloprenuer, I’ve had my own set of career challenges to face.
But this morning, I felt like “myself” again?
What Does That Even Mean???
I’ve heard many women say this from time to time, and I know you’ve said it before, too.
But what does that even mean?
Aren’t you “yourself” ALL the time? Come on!
As I said it to myself this morning, I began to wonder what the heck I meant by that, and WHY would we ever feel like that?
It’s not like you actually leave your body, only to return for some magical, unknown reason.
But there ARE times when you feel an inescapable knowing that you’ve abandoned yourself, and for whatever reason have now returned, if only for a moment.
What is that?
For me, it can be a fleeting moment of realization; one that passes within an hour or so. A familiar feeling, an arrival, much like coming home.
Ah, there it is.
If your body is your temple, and in your effort to achieve, grow, attain and build, you abandon your temple, then aren’t you abandoning your home?
This last year, I faced many challenges that forced me to choose survival over thriving. I gave up exercise to focus on getting things done. I sacrificed sleep to launch my business while working a full-time job. I went into a manic state of being that became routine, and in that routine, I got disconnected from my body and myself.
So how do you stay yourself all of the time? And why does it matter in your career?
I’m currently reading “Breakdown, Breakthrough: The Professional Woman’s Guide to Claiming a Life of Passion, Power, and Purpose” by Kathy Caprino, a career coach for women.
After years of study and research on women and their professional lives, she learned that women face a unique set of challenges when it comes to their careers.
She notes that women yearn for certain things:
- The opportunity to honor or express their various facets
- To respect the work they do and their colleagues, and to be respected in return
- To be treated fairly
- To earn the money they need to:
- Expand their self-reliance
- Achieve quality of life, flexibility or control over what they do and how they do it
- Balance their numerous important life roles
- Make a significant positive difference in the world and in the lives of others
- Utilize their voices, talents, and abilities
- Contribute fully in ways that reflect their unique needs and values without being negatively judged or diminishes
She highlights that in your struggle to attain a positive life experience that includes passion, power, purpose, security, integrity, self-reliance, and balance you might have to make room for a good deal of inner and outer work.
THIS is why I talk about “life stuff” in relation to your search for rewarding work.
Because let’s face it, as women, we kind of want it all, and we’ll find a way to achieve it by sacrificing all sorts of things.
Kathy Caprino states that breaking through to positive life change involves three powerful steps:
- Step back to disentangle from your situation and gain a fresh, expanded perspective.
- Let go of negative thinking and actions that hold you back.
- Say yes to honoring yourself and taking action toward what compels you.
This is the kind of work I do with my clients. This is the kind of work you need to do if you want to achieve a positive life experience.
THIS is why everything in your life matters when it comes to your career. It’s not like you can talk about one area without facing the others - they are intertwined.
So how do you stay yourself all the time?
In your effort to achieve greater and greater things, it is important not to abandon the other parts of you that need nurturing, like your health, your sanity, your sleep and your friends and family. Those parts of you will contribute to the all of you that is so passionately working towards a better career.
